Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
From a mosaic of vineyards in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Monforte d’Alba. “We have had an incredible series of very good vintages”, stats Luca Currado of Vietti, “one opulent vintage, then one more elegant, I will put in the drawer of the more ‘Burgundy’ vintages 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014”.
Tight, tense, formidable wine of detail and fine structure. Sits in the palate barely there, kitten tongue rasps as stern tannin swaddles the mouth, yet the wine feels light with fleeting licks of red fruit, earth, herbs, spice. It’s quiet in perfume too – a glorious reserve of fruit, spice and savoury. Bound and yet stretches its legs with long distance runner athleticism. A wine for generations. Remarkable. Only nebbiolo can do this.
