They put the Malbec in the Cabernet, and in the Shiraz and turn it out straight too. Fair to say, a little Malbec goes a long way at Wendouree. I believe, from memory, this may contain about 40% of it. And kind of, mainly just to annoy people, I’m doing a ‘pop and pour and just write’ on this wine.
There’s a lot going on here, and while the straight Shiraz from 2012 is a very good wine, I can’t help but feel a little bit of something-you-fancy-Sir, in the mix can only be a good thing. Malbec; it’s adding the top notes of roses, and also some of the base of deep plum. Shiraz is lending blackberry, and a little spice, then there’s mint and camphor chests. Medium bodied, lovely depth to this wine and ripe perfumed fruit, though there’s a twig and gum leaf character that normally I’d find distracting, yet here it seems just part of a whole. Sticky ribs of tannin and some amaro herb bitterness drags the finish very long. No doubt this is a wine of distinction, and if you’re good lucky, you don’t have to be a real big spender to get it.
